Submitting
How much does it cost to publish?
Nothing. There is no submission fee and no article processing charge, and every article is free to read. See open access and fees.
How do I submit a manuscript?
Create an account or sign in, then use the submission form. How to submit lists the files and details to prepare, and the guide for authors explains the formatting.
Which subjects does the journal cover?
Three sections: sustainable agriculture and food systems; biodiversity conservation and natural resource management; and environment and climate change. Details are in aims and scope.
Do I need to have my English edited before submitting?
No. Clear English helps reviewers, but it is your choice. If you'd like help, our language editing service costs 10 USD per page; using it, or not, has no influence on the decision.
Peer review and decisions
What kind of peer review do you use?
Double-blind: reviewers don't know who the authors are and authors don't know who the reviewers are. Remove author names and affiliations from the manuscript file you submit for review.
How long does it take to get a decision?
The editorial check usually takes a few days. With peer review, the process up to acceptance typically takes around 80 days, depending on the reviewers and on revisions. Publication follows about a week after acceptance.
Where can I see the status of my manuscript?
In your author dashboard. Track your research explains what each status means.
How long do I have to submit a revision?
The deadline is in the decision letter: usually 30 days for a minor revision and 60 days for a major one. If you need more time, reply to the editor before the deadline.
After acceptance
What happens after my manuscript is accepted?
Its title, authors and abstract appear under Just accepted. The production team then copyedits and typesets it, and the corresponding author receives the proofs.
How do I check my proofs?
The corresponding author receives a personal link by e-mail; no account is needed. You read the proof, answer the editor's queries, suggest corrections and approve it. At this stage only errors and essential corrections can be made.
Will my article get a DOI?
Yes. SustainaTerra is a Crossref member, so every published article receives a DOI under the prefix 10.68694. It is registered with Crossref together with the article's metadata and references, appears on the article page and in the PDF, and always resolves to the article.
Who owns the copyright?
You do. Articles are published under the CC BY 4.0 licence: you keep the copyright and anyone may reuse the work with credit to you. See what authors keep.
Can I get a printed copy of my article?
Yes. Articles, issues and volumes are printed on demand, and authors get a discount on their own article: see printed copies.
Reviewing for us
How can I become a reviewer?
Tick “Open to review invitations” when you create your account, or turn it on later in your profile. The guide for reviewers explains what we ask.
Why was I invited to review when I'm an author?
Authors and co-authors of SustainaTerra manuscripts may be invited to review papers in their field, but never their own or a co-author's. Every invitation can be accepted or declined, and you can turn invitations off in your profile. See the privacy policy.
Do reviewers get a certificate?
Yes. A certificate is issued for each completed review, and anyone can check that it is genuine from the verification link printed on it.

I received a payment request from SustainaTerra. Is it real?
We never charge for submission or publication. Don't pay, and forward the message to editorial@sustainaterra.org. Paid services such as language editing are only ever invoiced after you request and accept a quote.
